The Francis Crick Institute

Architon provided the architectural design for the SKYLAB Research Facility, a specialist rooftop laboratory and research environment within the existing steel roof structure of the Francis Crick Institute.

The scheme maximised research accommodation beneath the roof while maintaining the operation of the occupied floors below. An independent steel-framed structure, enclosed with pre-finished non-combustible insulated panels, minimised disruption and addressed the constraints of the rooftop location.

SKYLAB was designed as a standalone facility with independent laboratory infrastructure and plant, supported by primary utility connections from the existing building. The curved roof geometry enabled a partly two-storey arrangement with external plant zones.
Movement of people, equipment and research materials at Levels 8 and 9 was carefully planned, with extended vertical circulation and additional lift and stair access providing efficient connections to the wider Institute.

Level 8 includes five laboratory suites for chemical and biological research, including higher-grade research space, with modular furniture allowing layouts to adapt as programmes and equipment change. Breakout and collaboration areas support the laboratory environment.

Level 9 provides flexible office accommodation for up to 80 researchers, combining collaborative and focused workspaces beneath the steel roof structure. Natural daylight and panoramic views create a bright, open research environment.
