Rutherford Appleton Laboratories
Laboratory Facility
A new Laboratory Research Complex for the Science and Technology Facilities Council at
Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), Harwell.
The facility provides state-of-the-art laboratory space for visiting scientists using the adjacent
Diamond Light Source and other RAL facilities, including the Spallation Neutron Source and
Central Laser Facility.
The 6,800m² complex includes specialist laboratories and write-up offices over two floors,
with plant at roof level. It has a reinforced concrete frame, curtain walling to the offices and
aluminium rainscreen cladding elsewhere.
Sustainability features helped achieve a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating and include rainwater
harvesting for WC flushing, solar hot water and an underground air intake system that uses
ground temperature to temper incoming air and reduce running costs.
