Bio-containment Fish Laboratory
Architon LLP were appointed as Architect and Lead Consultant for the design and delivery of a specialist bio-containment fish research facility supporting the study of exotic and endemic marine species.
The 670m² facility incorporates high-specification containment environments, including SAPO CL3 specialist containment laboratories and SAPO CL3 containment aquaria with approved derogations. The facility includes three dedicated tank rooms and associated support areas, supported by an advanced effluent treatment system using ozone technology to treat liquid waste generated from the aquaria.
The project also incorporates genetically modified organism (GMO) containment laboratories with a dedicated thermal treatment plant for all laboratory liquid waste. General research laboratory facilities support virology, pathology, bacteriology, immunology, and histology activities, together with specialist support areas including glass wash, tissue culture, microscopy, sample quarantine, and chemical preparation.
Additional accommodation includes stores, general facility support areas, write-up offices, staff breakout spaces, and a dedicated processing suite for Fish Health Inspectors.
The building achieved a BREEAM “Excellent” rating through a bespoke assessment, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable design, environmental performance, and operational efficiency.
