Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital
Clinical Research Facility
This project involved the spatial optimization and layout integration of the Clinical Research Facility (CRF) on Level 1 of the Evelina London Children’s Hospital. Situated within the historic St Thomas’ Hospital campus, the primary challenge was embedding a highly technical, cutting-edge medical research hub into an active, child-centric healthcare environment.
The project centered on the Wolf Clinical Research Facility and adjacent pediatric imaging suites. Positioned on the "Arctic" themed first floor, the layout streamlines patient flow directly from the ground floor "Ocean" entrance. A critical success factor was developing intuitive wayfinding and transition corridors. These pathways seamlessly link the independent children’s facility with the wider St Thomas’ network, allowing medical staff to navigate between buildings efficiently.
By balancing strict clinical infrastructure requirements with the hospital's signature playful aesthetics, the design guarantees a low-stress environment for young participants. The final delivery successfully bridges the gap between complex academic research and accessible, compassionate pediatric care, reinforcing the Trust's status as a world leader in clinical innovation.
