Incinerator Extension & Refurbishment

This complex, multi-phased project involved the replacement and upgrade of two existing site incinerators within a new Building, a large industrial facility incorporating mezzanine-level support accommodation.

The existing incinerators were replaced with two new large rotary kiln incinerators and associated process equipment. The works were carefully phased to maintain operational continuity throughout construction.

Phase 1 focused on enabling works, including the demolition of an existing building and the creation of a new remote service yard.

Phase 2 delivered a new extension over the existing service yard to accommodate the first rotary kiln incinerator while maintaining the operation of the existing incineration facility.

Phase 3 involved the decommissioning and removal of the original incinerators and ancillary accommodation, installation of the second rotary kiln incinerator, construction of new mezzanine support accommodation, and the addition of an external cold store extension.

The main incinerator hall is a naturally ventilated industrial space with unheated conditions and natural daylighting.

Architon LLP was appointed by Arup in May 2017 to provide specialist architectural services. The project was delivered in accordance with BIM Level 2, requiring collaborative 3D modelling and coordinated design development across all disciplines.
